Melanie Cameron was born in Kitchener-Waterloo in 1971, moved to Winnipeg in 1996 where she established her writing career, and returned to Kitchener-Waterloo in 2005. She is the author of Holding the Dark (1999), which was a finalist for the Eileen MacTavish Sykes Award for Best First Book by a Manitoba Writer. Her second book, wake (2003), was a finalist for the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award. Cameron has twice been a finalist for the John Hirsch Award for Most Promising Manitoba Writer (1999, 2001). She has completed her third poetry manuscript, and is at work on a fourth manuscript of poems as well as projects in other genres. Cameron holds a BA in Rhetoric and Professional Writing from the University of Waterloo and an MA in English Literature from the University of Manitoba. While in Winnipeg, Cameron was Poetry Co-Editor for Prairie Fire magazine.
